1. Rebuild the City
The story of Logos Medical & Diagnostics began in a quiet, isolated space—a quarantine hotel room in Hong Kong during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, our city was weathering unprecedented storms. Hong Kong was torn by political turmoil and strict pandemic measures. The once vibrant international hub saw an almost empty airport, pervasive isolation, and widespread hardship. Housing and stock markets were plummeting, businesses were struggling, and above all, a spirit of hopelessness seemed to hang over the people.
During those days in quarantine, I listened to a sermon series from my local church titled "Rebuild the City." The messages walked through the Old Testament book of Nehemiah, depicting how the Jewish people returned from captivity to rebuild Jerusalem's broken walls and restore their community. That sermon planted a profound conviction in my heart. Hong Kong is the city I grew up in, the place that nurtured me, and I felt a strong spiritual calling to contribute to its restoration. My husband and I began asking ourselves how we, as medical professionals, could actively participate in rebuilding hope, health, and community in our home city.
2. A Calling to Restore Families Through Health
The second spark came directly from my daily clinical practice as a diagnostic radiologist specializing in breast imaging for over twenty years. One day, I received a thank-you card from a patient. She had been diagnosed with a very early, minute breast cancer—an abnormality so subtle it was remarkably difficult to detect, even with advanced 3D tomosynthesis mammography. In her card, she expressed deep gratitude, sharing how that timely detection changed the course of her life and saved her family from overwhelming tragedy.
Over my two decades in radiology, I have walked alongside many women facing breast cancer. What touched my heart most deeply were the young mothers going in and out of hospital wards, undergoing painful treatments, and in some heartbreaking cases, passing away while their children were still very small.
Through much prayer, my husband and I felt God calling us to establish a Christian-based diagnostic imaging center. We realized that by protecting and restoring women's health through early detection, we were directly helping to restore and protect families.
We sought to conduct our medical practice in a godly, Christian manner. We wanted to create meaningful employment, remunerating and helping our team members discover their true worth in the medical field within a supportive, healthy work environment. Furthermore, we longed to share the Gospel with the patients who walked through our doors. We named our center Logos—the Greek word for "The Word"—with the prayer that every Logos site would serve as a physical testimony on earth to John 1:14: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
3. Facing the Reality of Early Detection
In our clinic, we frequently meet women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, including patients as young as their 20s. Over the past 30 years, the incidence of newly diagnosed breast cancer cases has dramatically increased—plunging nearly sixfold in Hong Kong.
A cancer diagnosis is terrifying and emotionally debilitating. Its impact ripples far beyond the patient, affecting multi-generational families—spouses, young children, and aging parents alike. Because of this, we view our role as far more than just reading imaging scans or delivering medical reports. We make it a priority to see our patients in person, listen attentively to their fears and needs, provide clear medical guidance on the next steps, and offer genuine encouragement to help them adopt a positive, hopeful outlook during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. For those facing tissue biopsies, we surround them with gentle, reassuring care and soothing comfort to quiet their anxious hearts; and when our patients go through difficult treatments like chemotherapy, we hold their hands, praying and weeping with them in shared hope and Christian love.
4. Designing a Sanctuary of Calm
Recognizing how frightening a medical evaluation can be, we paid careful attention to every detail of our clinic's physical environment. Traditional, stark white clinical interiors often heighten anxiety and make patients feel institutionalized or uneasy. To counteract this, we deliberately chose an interior design featuring soothing green tones and rich, dark accents.
This calming color palette creates a warm, grounding atmosphere reminiscent of nature and quiet reflection. By stepping away from cold, sterile aesthetics, we aim to provide a peaceful sanctuary where patients can feel relaxed, safe, and emotionally comforted from the moment they enter our doors.
5. Partnering in God’s Work
We recognize that we are sinners and completely undeserving of serving God, yet it is an immense privilege and honor to participate in His work. As a faith-based practice, we integrate our ministry into daily operations:
- Spiritual Comfort: We partnered with Our Daily Bread to distribute thousands of Gospel-centered devotional leaflets to patients waiting in our reception area.
- Holistic Patient Care: We listen closely to our patients' broader medical and emotional needs, seamlessly connecting them with trusted breast surgeons, gynecologists, and other specialists whenever further care is required.
- Serving the Ministry: We recently became medical advisors for a Christian ministry, providing health support and guidance to local ministers and Christian workers.
- Global Stewardship: By God’s grace, we dedicate a portion of our practice's revenue to support a Christian orphanage in Myanmar, extending Christ's love to vulnerable children beyond Hong Kong.
5. Challenges and Moving Forward
Stepping out of the clinical realm into entrepreneurship has brought significant challenges. As trained doctors, we had virtually no formal background in business administration, financial management, or personnel leadership. Navigating an ever-changing market, managing diverse expectations from business partners, clients, and employees, and learning how to remain steadfast in Christ through daily operational pressure requires constant grace and humility.
Despite these hurdles, God has sustained us. We are currently in our first year operating the flagship Logos Medical & Diagnostics clinic, and we are already partnering with like-minded visionaries to prepare for our second center in Hong Kong.
Our company logo features a series of dots and lines coming together to form a cross. It serves as a visual reminder of our foundational mission: to connect people (the dots) through Christ, demonstrating to the world through our daily work, clinical diligence, and compassionate care that we belong to Him.
